Beginning its radiotherapy work in 1952, the Department of Radiotherapy was officially established in 1987, becoming one of the earliest work units to develop radiotherapy treatments both in the army and in China. Its Master’s degree program was approved and authorized in 1985, and its doctoral program was approved in 2001 (the doctorial suppervisor, Jin Yening, went to work at the Shanghai Ruijin Hospital in 2004). Many Doctoral and Postgraduate candidates have been trained in this center. And many of them have become academic leaders in their respective units.

In July 2011, it invested more than 6 million USD to introduce the most advanced radiosurgery cancer therapy equipment available - the CyberKnife, including a complete set of therapy plans, auxiliary equipment and measurement instruments - making the department one of few work units with ultra-high-grade radiotherapy equipment (there are now 17 work units with this technology). It carries out radiosurgery “operations” without blood, pain or anesthetic, dramatically shortens the course of treatment, and improves patients’ quality of life. Over the course of one year of clinical therapy observation, it has cured or improved the condition of the majority of patients, and enhanced patients’ quality of life. From January 2012 to December 2013, the CyberKnife altogether treated 1,794 new patients (including more than 1000 in 2013). Its annual average number of treated patients ranks number one in China, and leads worldwide in the number of treated cases of pancreatic cancer. The number of CyberKnife-treated cases of lung cancer and liver cancer ranks at the top in China as well.
